Exclusive interview Mike Williams: "It all starts with the drop"

Feb 24, 2016

Mike Williams has just been revealed as the artist behind 'Sweet And Sour'. We had a short talking with this young new Spinnin' star.

It's been an impressive ride with this track, as 'Sweet And Sour' caught an amazing wave recently, getting picked up by DJs like Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, Oliver Heldens, Afrojack, Axwell, Dillon Francis and...Tiësto, who immediately signed it to his label Musical Freedom.

And to think this guy's only 19 years old! Recently, he signed an exclusive deal with Spinnin' Records, and after a cool ID campaign his first single 'Sweet And Sour' comes out Monday February 29th. We already had a chat with Mike Williams.

Hey Mike, you’ve just been revealed as the artist behind ‘Sweet And Sour’, a track that’s been getting widespread support from loads of DJs. How did you experience the whole ID campaign these last weeks?
"It was very hard for me to keep it a secret! I couldn’t tell anyone that Sweet & Sour was my track, and I received a lot of questions about it. Even when I did a seminar during Dancefair, people where asking if I was the artist behind the track and it was very hard to give the right answer in front of all those people. Also it was crazy to see all those big DJs playing my track, although they didn’t know it was mine! I was so happy when my name was finally revealed!"

You have also been announced as the brand new signing to Spinnin’ Records. How did this happen, and how do you feel now you’re called a big promise for the future?
"I’ve been producing and DJ’ing for a long time and of course it was amazing when Spinnin’ approached me. Before I created ‘Sweet & Sour’, I worked a lot in the studio to improve my skills. Spinnin’ helped me a lot in this process and gave me the right feedback. For me it feels weird that people call me ‘a big promise for the future’ cause I see myself as a pretty normal guy who just made music as a hobby haha, and now I’m here! I can’t wait to release all my new music!"

How did you create ‘Sweet And Sour’? Any technical tricks you’d like to share with us?
"I started with creating the drop. I used to start my projects with the break and work towards the drop but the drop was always disappointing then. Now when I start with the drop it all gets much easier. ‘Sweet & Sour’ was a project I finished relatively quickly. I had an idea in my mind for the drop: an easy melody that would get stuck in your head combined with a cool bassline."

"Of course I have some technical tricks for the producers. In almost all my projects I layer a lot of sounds; separately they sound really bad but combined they sound exactly how I want them. So layering helps me a lot! Also, there are some people that come up with really complex theories about producing but my opinion is: If it sounds good, it sounds good, no matter how you did it!"

What are your plans now? What’s your summer look like? Working on new music already?
"I have a lot of new projects ready to be released, also a really cool collab! I also hope to do a lot of gigs in the summer, especially festivals! Some of them are already confirmed and I can’t wait!"
