Exclusive interview Mike Williams: 'Can't wait to keep the rollercoaster going!'
Jul 20, 2016
Mike Williams is enjoying an amazing year. Massive Tiësto support, the fresh face of Sony's new Extra Bass Audioline and now preparing for his first Tomorrowland performance. We had a short talk with the young buck..
Hey Mike, you must have been going through a rollercoaster this year. From your debut release on Musical Freedom, going on stage with Tiësto during Ultra Music Festival Miami to touring the world yourself, including high profile gigs in Las Vegas, including the EDC Vegas festival. How have you experienced all this?
"This year is absolutely an amazing year for me! I never expected to be in the line-up for so many great festivals. Of course going on stage with the legend Tiësto was a dream coming true for me, but all the great things that happened afterwards made it even better. I love being on the road and share my music with other people. It was crazy to open the mainstage at EDC Las Vegas and I never expected so many fans during my set! I just can’t wait to release all my new music and keep the rollercoaster rolling haha!"
Could you describe the difference with your life about a year ago?
"A year ago I finished high school and I was 24/7 in the studio working on my tracks. Now I’m touring a lot and I have to combine that with studio-work of course! But in my opinion there is a huge difference in the way of life, it’s less structured than a year ago."
Did you still have time for yourself since you've been doing so many gigs? And if so, what are you doing in your free time?
"Yes of course! I always try to make time for my friends and if I’m home for a couple of days we always try to do something fun, like going out."
Recently, you've also been made part of a very special campaign for Sony's Extra Bass Audioline? How did this come about?
"Yes! We did a video shoot at the Spinnin’ Hotel during Miami Music Week and a shoot in Amsterdam as well! I really like their Extra Bass speakers! They also made me headphones with my logo on it; I always use them during my sets. Sony is, of course, a huge brand and it’s really cool and a bit weird to see myself in their promotion video’s. Also it was really fun to work with them, great people!"
What has happened with that campaign; what did you do?
"As I mentioned, a video shoot in Miami and Amsterdam for their new Extra Bass Speakers. We also took a lot of pictures which are now used on social media and the Sony website. The video shoot in Miami was at Nautilus hotel, where we shot before and during my set at Spinnin’ Sessions. In Amsterdam we went to the Rem-eiland, a really cool location and it was such a fun day! Both videos are online now!"
This weekend, you'll be playing Tomorrowland, another highlight in your still very early career. What are you expecting, and what do you have prepared?
"I’ve never been to Tomorrowland, but I think it’s on almost everyone’s bucket list! To perform on Tomorrowland feels amazing and I can’t wait to see how incredible this festival is. Of course I watched the aftermovies of the past few years but it’s always different to experience it by yourself. I prepared a cool set, with some cool mashups and brand new ID tracks. I heard from other DJ’s that the crowd at the Mazda stage is very energetic so I can’t wait!"
What record will you be surely playing at Tomorrowland?
"I will definitely play my new collaboration with Tiësto. It’s coming out really soon!"
And finally, after such an enormous first six months, what can we expect from you in the second half of 2016?
"I’m doing a lot of cool shows at the end of 2016! A new remix is coming up and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. Also my collaboration with Tiësto is coming out and some cool tracks afterwards."
