Exclusive interview Deepend: 'Ready to spread our sound across all continents'

Aug 10, 2016

Deepend is back! After dropping their worldwide hit remix of Matt Simons' 'Catch & Release' last year, they now return on Spinnin' Records with new single 'I'm Intoxicated'. High time to have a talk with the guys!

Everybody seemed to be singing along to Matt Simons last year, especially the remix delivered by Deepend. As they are making waves again with 'I'm Intoxicated', we caught the Dutch duo for an exclusive interview.

Hey guys, first of all, what have you been up to lately?
"Hi, thanks for the interview! We’re currently in the middle of our summer tour playing a lot of cool festivals like Tomorrowland and we just kicked off our first Ibiza season with six shows at Ushuaia and Pacha. We’ve also just released our new single 'I’m Intoxicated' on Spinnin’ Deep and we’ve been asked to make the official remix for Gnash’s hit song 'I Hate U, I Love U' which has just been released."

You’re new single ’I'm Intoxicated’ is getting huge responses. What can you tell us about this track?
"
We started with this track almost a year ago when we found an interesting female R&B acapella. We pitched down the vocal and it sounded great together with the piano chords. We started to play the track in our DJ sets and we got a lot of positive feedback from the crowd. In the end, we decided to replace the acapella with brand new vocals so we asked Debrah Jade to write and record new vocals for the track. She did an amazing job and came up with the “I’m Intoxicated” lyrics. We finished the track and sent it immediately to Spinnin’ :)

As an artist, this track enables us to show the people a more uplifting side of Deepend. We don’t stick to a single genre and we’re happy to present you our clubby and uplifting side as follow up for 'Catch & Release'."

What has been the coolest thing in your musical career up till now?
"Besides all the great bookings, the coolest thing for us is to see people sing along with our songs. It’s such a special feeling when you start with an idea in the studio, work on the track for months, release the song and then hear people in other countries singing along with our track. Goosebumps! :) It’s also very special to hear your song on the radio. We can’t get used to that haha!"

What artists/movies/books/art inspires you the most when creating music?
"We get inspiration from many sources. We listen to a lot of different styles of music, but we also get inspired by nature, movies, art and meeting new people. While being on tour, it’s really inspiring for us to meet people who follow their heart and are really passionate about what they do. We also love to listen to perfectly crafted productions in any genre and to discover all the tiny details in a track."

What do you think is the most interesting development in dance music these days?
"
The most interesting development for us is the recurrence of emotions in dance music. For several years, dance music was more about impact than melodies and chords progressions. Nowadays it’s about real songs with touching lyrics and musicality. We are also very happy to see that both artists and crowd break through genres and are more open minded. This is also reflected in line-ups with more variety in music on the main stages."

What are your goals for the future?
"Our goal is to further develop Deepend both in the studio and on stage. We keep continuing to produce music for radio and clubs and we’d love to make an album in the future. We’d like to spread our sound across all continents and have a worldwide booking schedule. Our biggest long-term goal is to release an artist album combined with our own tour and own production."

And finally, what would you advise the upcoming stars on our Talent Pool?
"
Our advice for upcoming producers would be: Make sure that you’re passionate about your music. Don’t follow a trend, but follow your own taste. Spend as much time as possible in the studio in order to develop your signature sound and productions skills. Ask your friends and family for feedback and keep continuing! It took us years to get to a certain production level, so have fun in the studio and keep on producing tracks!"

Stay tuned for more Deepend!
