Exclusive interview: New Dance Music Friday featuring Anna Lunoe & Sleepy Tom
Mar 31, 2017
We proudly present the New Dance Music Friday feature, your weekly update on all newly released dance tracks, brought together on one amazing Spotify playlist. Featured this week (among many others): Anna Lunoe & Sleepy Tom! Together they release their new single ‘Stay Awake’ today, and provide the list with some musical tips, and tell all about it in this exclusive interview.
Hey, you just released your new track ‘Stay Awake’. How did you create this?
Sleepy Tom: "Anna and I wrote this start to finish in my Vancouver studio. We wanted to make a song that would be great to play at the beginning of our DJ sets. One that would hit the reset button on the crowd and lure them in, before bringing the energy back."
Anna Lunoe: "Me and Sleepy tom had already made a track called 'Pusher' together, and we both still really love that track. We wanted to avoid making something similar to it thematically. We needed to break the formula we had and come at it from a totally different angle as to not be compared or compete with the last one. I came up with the spoken word intro idea one morning that week - just seemed like a fresh concept that I hadn't seen done for a long time and that can be really epic when done right! I'm so happy with how it turned out!"
What does this record say about your musical evolution as an artist?
Sleepy Tom: "I think Anna and I just wanted to do something a little different than our last collaboration. I think the musicality of the intro is something you'll hear more in my new songs!"
Anna Lunoe: "I really try to avoid formulas in my music. I don't want to deliver a similar vocal ten times, or a similar drop ten times I want it to always feel surprising to the listener. I just hope that this track is another step forward and it resonates with people like it does to us."
The track is featured on Spinnin’s New Dance Music Friday playlist. How important is Spotify to you?
Sleepy Tom: "Spotify is amazing! It's been a huge tool for finding new music as well as digging through old stuff. I use it everyday."
